Gabriella "Gabby" Montoya

Human · Fae Bloodline · First Key

Born in Bromstilk to Clarence and Martha Montoya, Gabby has carried the Tree of Life sigil on her left cheek since age thirteen — a gnarled, bark-like mark that blooms as her fated mates are found. Quick-witted, fiercely loyal, and prone to self-sacrifice, she volunteers at charitable causes, sells intricate embroidery at the marketplace, and journals obsessively. Her blood functions as a magical conduit — she is the First Key to the Vyndari War, capable of channeling other-worldly levels of magic. An invisibility ability and a suppressed fae heritage make her the most hunted woman in both earthen and fae realms.

Gabby's chosen sister and the beating heart of her humanity.

Human · Bromstilk

A decent man who genuinely cared for Gabby but could not truly understand the weight of her curse. Their relationship was warm but limited — her pleasure was muted with him, as the Tree of Life curse requires true mates. He knew about the curse. Contrast to the feral energy of the pack: safe, stable, human. The pack threatened to remove him permanently when the mate bond activated.

Human · Morally Compromised Parent

Made the inciting deal of Trilogy 2: she traded Eliana to the Nichil dragons in exchange for the remains of her late husband Micheal Preveya, who was lost in battle against the Nichil people. She also suppressed knowledge of Eliana's fae heritage from her daughter for her entire life. Her actions set both the romance and the war arc in motion.

Interactive Grimoire

World of
Rathmoor

Three realms. Two wars. One shared universe spanning Earth (Rathmoor), the Fae realm (Vyndari), and the Nichil dragon homeland in upper Alaska. Events in each series directly affect the others.

Rathmoor — The Earthen Realm

Rathmoor is the earthen realm where human and tribal civilisations reside, shaped roughly like the continent of Africa — large and varied in its landscapes. It functions as the fairytale universe all citizens call home. Major locations include Bromstilk (Gabby's hometown and a major kingdom), the Redlyn Forest (separating Bromstilk from Nausau lands, home to witch Meredith and Cricket Pond), Nausau Territory (ancient ancestral tribal lands), and Milanis (where Arianna lives). The kingdom of Philatron to the west is the seat of the King's Men.

Trilogy 1 primary setting
Vyndari — The Fae Realm

Vyndari is the entirety of the Fae Realms — the dimensional space where fae reside, divided into four directional courts plus outlying territories. Currently in the midst of a civil war between the West Court (Gyndare) and North Court (Aqundrias) over control of the Ackquera, a contested magical resource. The Acousta lies outside Vyndari — the Blacklands, a dangerous liminal space home to rogue magicians and human prisoners. The sacred spring Ninver lies near the Aqundrias border.

Fae war ongoing
Nichil — Dragon Homeland (Upper Alaska)

The Nichil dragons originate from the icy reaches of upper Alaska, where glaciers vein the landscape and the aurora borealis dances overhead. Their homeland consists of ancient caverns deep within glaciers. Climate change and magical disturbances have forced bands of Nichil to migrate southward into Rathmoor. The Frost brothers struggle with Rathmoor's summer heat — Jack imports hundreds of pounds of ice from across the ocean just to stay comfortable during the warmer months.

Trilogy 2 homeland
Aqundrias — North Court

Ruled by Queen Sarsaparilla's Monarchy of Sassy. Species: Winter fae, High Fae, and unnamed species. Anti-diplomacy, pro-monarchy. Controls the Ackquera and refuses to negotiate access to it. Has more highly skilled magicians than any other court. Currently at war with Gyndare. Queen Sarsaparilla herself has crystal blue eyes and bright red hair — she wants more than Gabby's blood. She wants her mind, will, and soul.

Primary antagonist court
Gyndare — West Court

Anti-monarchy and anti-Prionogenic. Species: Fire, Water, and Autumn fae — more diverse in both species and economics than the North. Currently at war with Aqundrias, believing they deserve more resources and support. Their core demand: access to the Ackquera, the contested magical resource controlled by the North. They started or escalated the conflict that now spills magical chaos into the earthen realm.

Neutral Courts — Flarantyne & Sumnalia

Flarantyne (East Court) hosts Earth, Air, and Spring fae — currently neutral in the West-North war. Sumnalia (South Court) hosts Forest, Time, and Summer fae — also neutral. Both courts are referenced but their full political roles in the wider world arc are still being developed. They will likely be drawn into the conflict as the wars escalate across series.

Expansion forthcoming
Seelie & Unseelie Courts

These courts function across realms rather than directionally. The Seelie Court is situated near Aqundrias and oversees all Seelie species regardless of which inner-realm they inhabit. The Unseelie Court is near the Blacklands (Acousta) and oversees all Unseelie species. Fae wolf species like Rupert and Bridget — who attacked Gabby — fall under their broader oversight.

Witch Magic

Old, powerful, and binding. Witches like Meredith "hear what you mean, not what you say" — their spells reflect the true intent of the supplicant, not the literal request. Nobody can break Meredith's spells except a true mate. Curses always come with unintended consequences. Magic rarely does just what you ask. Always comes with a cost.

Fae Magic & Blood Oaths

Extremely powerful — capable of knocking a man unconscious in seconds (Journey was downed instantly). Fae create binding blood oaths that are permanent and cannot be easily unwound. Sarsaparilla's magic pulses inside Gabby "like a second heartbeat." The fae war's magic overflows into the earthen realm, causing the Nausau vs. King's Men war to become harder, longer, and more extreme than it would naturally be.

Cross-realm spillage confirmed
Tribal Magic — The Gadugi

Ancient Nausau ceremonial magic used for protection, healing, and bond rituals. The Gadugi is a shared psychic mind-bond among pack/tribe members — used for communication and coordinated action. Shamans commune with spirits and ancestors. Ancient rituals can transfer or share magical bonds (as August plans to attempt). Weakened by serious injury or magical interference — August's deal with Sarsaparilla weakened the pack's Gadugi link.

Dragon Magic — Ice & Frost

Nichil dragons carry their power in their physical form. Even in human form, they can create frost patterns on surfaces and chill the air. Jack and John are most powerful; Jerrod's abilities are more subtle. In dragon form: fire/breath, aurora-based perception, massive scale-based resilience. When Eliana breaks the Curse of the Begotten, latent fae magic awakens within Nichil bloodlines — abilities like enhanced perception or glamour. Dragon ages are far beyond their human appearances: Jack is 918 years old.

The Tree of Life Curse — Gabby

Cast by Meredith on infant Gabriella at her parents' request — they sought a protection blessing for their sickly daughter. Instead they received a fated-mate lock. The Tree of Life sigil appears on Gabby's left cheek at age thirteen: gnarled and bark-like at first, it blooms into a full tree as true mates are encountered. Her physical pleasure is muted with anyone who is not a true mate. She cannot bear children except with her fated mates. The mark cannot be removed by any magic except the true mate bond completing — and only Meredith knows the ancient chant.

Cannot be broken except by true mate
The Curse of the Begotten — Frost Brothers

An ancient fae queen from Eliana's bloodline created a pact with the first Nichil dragons for peace and mutual protection. When the dragons broke the vow — seeking dominion over fae lands — she cursed them: they will seek their fated mate but cannot truly recognise or see her clearly. They cannot feel love's touch. Only when she willingly offers herself, igniting her fae magic, will she awaken their slumbering legacy. The curse was prophesied: "When frost meets fire, fierce and rare, / The dragons rise, the curse laid bare."

Eliana is the destined breaker
Gabby's Blood Oath with Sarsaparilla

Gabby traded a blood oath to Queen Sarsaparilla in exchange for two healing potions: red for August (fae infection), purple for Arianna (postpartum crisis). The queen's magic now pulses inside Gabby like a second heartbeat. August simultaneously made a deal while dying in a vision — his bond with Gabby is tied to the queen's will. If Gabby fights Sarsaparilla, August dies. A double chain. August secretly plans a Nausau ritual with a shaman to transform his binding — at the possible cost of his own life.

Critical cliffhanger — Book 3
The Nausau People

The primary tribal civilisation of Rathmoor — the most knowledgeable group in the earthen realm about fae, other universes, and mystical phenomena. Their knowledge comes from millennia of oral tradition passed down through dances around fires, sacred ceremonies, medicine events, and direct supernatural encounters. They have since marked this knowledge in rock, leather, and their own developed language. They are the original inhabitants of all Rathmoor — their ancestral lands predate Bromstilk and Neatriquth.

Nausau Sectors & Rogue Packs

The Nausau are divided into sectors — Percival is from the Wonnoai sector. Each sector has its own customs within the larger tribal structure. Some Nausau leave the structure and form independent rogue packs: Percival's pack (with August, Journey, and Talon) operates from a cabin just south of the Nausau border in Redlyn Forest. Rogue packs operate under different rules but maintain tribal knowledge and the Gadugi bond. Other tribal communities coexist in Rathmoor, smaller in number, all with their own traditions — peaceful with each other until settlers arrived.

The Mate Bond System

Every person in Rathmoor has a designated true mate. Most in Bromstilk settle for less — love is considered a luxury, "like catching lightning in a bottle." The bond activates by proximity, scent, and magical recognition. True mates recognise each other by scent. Gabby's mark bloomed and changed when she first encountered the pack. The Nausau Gadugi allows multiple mates to share a pack/mate bond — Gabby's four true mates (Percival, August, Journey, Talon) are an unusual but valid configuration under tribal lore.

The Earthen War: Nausau vs. King's Men

The Nausau fight to protect ancestral lands that predate Bromstilk — the King views them as savages and their lands as ripe for conquest. The war is worsened by fae war spillage: without the magical overflow from Vyndari, the Nausau would have remained peaceful. The King becomes more desperate the more he is questioned internally — using the war to consolidate power and distract from dissent. Hundreds of the King's Men have died; yet the war continues and has spread to Philatron (King's Land).

Worsened by fae war spillage
The Fae War: West Court vs. North Court

Gyndare (West) wants access to the Ackquera — the contested magical resource controlled entirely by Aqundrias (North). The North refuses all negotiation. Both sides have long grievances. The fae war's magical overflow into the earthen realm directly escalates the Nausau war — making both sides act beyond their nature. This cross-realm effect is the meta-arc connecting both series: as the fae war intensifies, so does everything below it. Gabby and Eliana — the two Keys — must both be present for the war arc to resolve.

Meta-arc spanning both trilogies

The Lexicon

Vocabulary of Rathmoor

Tree of Life

/ triː əv laɪf /

The sigil-curse cast by witch Meredith on Gabby as an infant. Appears on her left cheek at age thirteen as a gnarled tree-trunk mark. Blooms into a full Tree of Life as each true mate is encountered. Locks physical pleasure and fertility to fated mates only.

Of Blood & Beasts

Gadugi

/ ɡəˈduːɡi /

The Nausau pack mind-bond. A shared psychic link among bonded tribe or pack members — used for communication, coordinated action, and shared emotional weight. Weakened by serious injury or magical interference. August's deal with Sarsaparilla fractured the pack's Gadugi in Trilogy 1.

Of Blood & Beasts

Vyndari

/ vɪnˈdɑːri /

The entirety of the Fae Realms — the dimensional space containing all four courts and their territories. Distinct from Rathmoor (earthen) and Nichil (dragon homeland). The current fae civil war between Gyndare and Aqundrias takes place here, with magical spillage seeping into the earthen realm.

Both Series

Nichil

/ ˈnɪkɪl /

A subspecies of Frost Dragon originating from glacier caverns in upper Alaska. Pale, frost-kissed skin; silvery-white or icy blue hair; aurora eyes that shift in colour. High tolerance for cold; they suffer in warm climates. The Frost brothers (Jack, John, Jerrod) are Nichil.

Touching Frost

Aqundrias

/ əˈkwʌndriəs /

The North Fae Court, ruled by Queen Sarsaparilla's Monarchy of Sassy. Species: Winter fae and High Fae. Anti-diplomacy, pro-monarchy. Controls the Ackquera. Has the most skilled magicians in Vyndari. Currently at war with Gyndare (West Court).

Both Series

Gyndare

/ ˈɡɪndɛər /

The West Fae Court. Species: Fire, Water, and Autumn fae — diverse in both species and economics. Anti-monarchy. Demands access to the Ackquera, the magical resource controlled by Aqundrias. Currently at war with the North Court; their conflict causes magical spillage into Rathmoor.

Both Series

The Ackquera

/ əˈkwɛrə /

The contested magical resource or territory at the centre of the fae civil war. Controlled by Aqundrias (North); Gyndare (West) demands access. Its exact nature — water source, land, or magical artifact — is among the most closely guarded secrets of the North Court. Both wars hinge on its possession.

Both Series

Redlyn Forest

/ ˈrɛdlɪn /

The heavily magical and dangerous forest separating Bromstilk from Nausau lands. Home to witch Meredith and to Cricket Pond, a sacred Nausau tribal site. Nausau members patrol it. Gabby first encounters the pack in the Redlyn after a fae wolf attack.

Of Blood & Beasts

Bromstilk

/ ˈbrɒmstɪlk /

Gabby's hometown — one of the largest kingdoms in Rathmoor. A social hierarchy built around mate bonds. Home to the marketplace, Aaron's blacksmithing, and Mary's flower shop. Currently at war with the Nausau, their children raised to fear tribal people. Controlled politically from Philatron, the King's Land to the west.

Of Blood & Beasts

Curse of the Begotten

/ bɪˈɡɒtən /

The curse placed by a fae queen on the Frost dragon bloodline after the dragons broke their peace pact and sought dominion over fae lands. The cursed brothers seek their fated mate but cannot truly see or recognise her. Only when she willingly offers herself — igniting her fae magic — will the curse break and their slumbering legacy awaken.

Touching Frost

Heart of Frost and Flame

/ hɑːt əv frɒst /

The prophesied title for Eliana Preveya — the mortal with fae bloodline destined to break the Curse of the Begotten, restore the ancient fae-dragon alliance, and serve as the Second Key to the Vyndari War. Also called "the spark of mortal fire" and "the fated heart."

Touching Frost

Nausau

/ ˈnɔːsaʊ /

The primary tribal civilisation of Rathmoor. Original inhabitants of the land, including what is now Bromstilk and Neatriquth. The most knowledgeable group about fae and other realms. Their knowledge is passed down through oral tradition, ceremony, and shamanic practice. Divided into sectors (Percival is from the Wonnoai sector).

Both Series

Acousta

/ əˈkuːstə /

The Blacklands — an area outside Vyndari itself. A dangerous, liminal space home to rogue magicians and human prisoners. Neither fully fae realm nor earthen, it is the place where the worst deals are made and where even the courts tread cautiously.
